This reminds me of how trains revolutionized car manufacturing logistics. Shipping methods like this directly impacted production schedules and inventory management across the country.

The real story here is probably about cost reduction during an era of tight margins. But that maintenance cost factor was likely huge. Dealers probably had to perform significant inspections and adjustments on arrival.

Following up on my earlier point - has anyone documented the actual safety record of vertical Vegas shipments? I'm genuinely curious about the failure rate and if it justified the space savings.

I found a reference to this in an old automotive trade journal. It says they used this method primarily for short to medium distance hauls. Long-distance shipments still used traditional horizontal methods.

Would love to see a documentary or detailed breakdown of the engineering specs. How much space did they save compared to traditional methods? Anyone have those numbers?

If this was such a great solution, why didn't it become standard practice? That's my question. Usually good ideas get adopted industry-wide eventually.

Probably because horizontal transport became more standardized with newer rail car designs. Economics of scale and infrastructure catch up to replace even clever solutions sometimes.
