I was reading this fascinating article about the UK's battle against drunk drivers and thought it deserved its own discussion here. The history is absolutely mental when you think about it.
For decades, drunk driving was barely regulated in Britain. Can you imagine? People would stumble out of pubs and climb into their cars without anyone batting an eyelid. The attitude was completely different back then compared to today's strict enforcement.
The turning point came gradually through the 1960s and 1970s when serious accidents forced the government's hand. The breathalyzer test was introduced in 1967, which was genuinely revolutionary at the time. Before that, there was basically no way to prove someone was over the limit unless they were completely incapacitated.
What shocked me most was learning about some of the ridiculous cases from earlier decades. People convicted of drunk driving sometimes received laughably light sentences. There were even stories of wealthy individuals getting away with it because of their connections. The whole system was corrupt and ineffective.
The real change came through public campaigns and stricter penalties. The drink-drive limit was established, random breath tests became common, and suddenly people actually had to think twice before driving after alcohol. Penalties increased significantly over time.
Today we're in such a different place. Modern technology helps with detection, public awareness is high, and the stigma around drunk driving is real. But it took an outrageous amount of time and far too many preventable deaths to get here.
I'm curious what everyone else thinks about this history. Did any of you know how bad things were in the UK's past? And what about the effectiveness of current measures - are they working well enough?

Really interesting piece! The 1967 breathalyzer introduction was genuinely a game-changer. Before that it was basically the honor system, which obviously failed spectacularly. The number of drunk driving deaths in the 1960s was horrifying by modern standards.

The maintenance costs associated with vehicles have skyrocketed since all these safety regulations came in. Modern breathalyzers, interlocks, and compliance equipment add hundreds to annual upkeep. Not defending drunk driving at all, but the financial burden on motorists has been substantial.

Thanks for engaging everyone! @sarahgarcia866 I understand your point, but the statistics speak for themselves. Fewer people die on our roads now than in the 1970s despite more traffic. That's because of enforcement and awareness. It's not about overreach, it's about saving lives.

Absolutely mad how casual people were about it back then. My grandfather used to tell stories about driving home from the pub completely plastered in the 1950s. Now that would be an instant arrest. Thankfully attitudes have changed so dramatically.

I completely disagree with the idea that stricter laws are the answer. People should be trusted to make their own decisions. The government overreach in this area is excessive. Enforcement has gone too far and targeted responsible drinkers unfairly.

Great summary of the timeline! What amazed me was how long it took for public opinion to shift. Even in the 1980s there was still a 'boys will be boys' attitude about drunk driving. Now it's universally condemned, which is absolutely right.

The penalties now are proper harsh, which I think is justified. Prison time, hefty fines, driving bans - it's a real consequence. But I wonder if we're still not doing enough in terms of rehabilitation and education programs for offenders.

I disagree that the current system is working well. We still have thousands of drink-drive incidents annually. The real solution needs to involve better public transport in rural areas where alternatives to driving are limited. Enforcement alone isn't enough.

@michaellim659 From what I've read, most European countries followed similar patterns but at different speeds. Sweden and Germany were also early adopters of strict drink-drive laws. The US was actually slower to take it seriously in some states.
