Just spotted this news - Changan is bringing the Deepal S05 to the UK market, and it's positioned as a direct rival to the Nio Elroq at around £38,000. This is quite significant for the EV market as it represents another affordable Chinese electric vehicle option for British buyers.
From what I've gathered, the S05 is a compact electric SUV with decent range and features. The pricing puts it in an interesting position - it's going to undercut a lot of premium European alternatives while offering competitive specs. Changan's been making waves internationally, so this could be a game-changer.
What strikes me most is the value proposition. At £38k, you're looking at a car that could seriously shake up the affordable EV segment. The Elroq has done well, but having more competition can only be good for consumers.
I'm curious about a few things though: How will UK buyers perceive a Changan badge compared to established brands? What's the dealer network and after-sales support going to look like? And honestly, how does the build quality compare to its European competitors?
The specs seem solid on paper - decent battery options and modern infotainment - but real-world experience will be crucial. Has anyone here tested one or know more details about the UK launch timeline and trim levels?
Thoughts on whether this could be a genuine threat to established EV makers in this price bracket?

This is exactly what the market needs! More affordable EV options mean the technology becomes accessible to regular people. The Elroq has been dominating this segment, so competition will drive prices down even further.

Anyone know what the maintenance costs look like for Changan vehicles? That's always the hidden expense with these newer Chinese brands. Parts availability in the UK could be a real headache.

Interesting move by Changan. The £38k price point is aggressive, but I'm skeptical about long-term reliability. Chinese EVs are still relatively untested in the UK market compared to Tesla or BMW. Would want to see some independent reviews first before considering it.

£38k is a sweet spot. It's below the premium brands but above the basic budget options. If they can deliver reliability, this could genuinely steal market share from established players.

Fair point about the reliability concerns, james_lee. But we have to remember that brands like Volkswagen and BMW were once foreign names too. Changan has been around for decades and is one of China's largest automakers. They're not some startup. The build quality I've seen is genuinely impressive for the price.

Skeptical. Chinese brand recognition in the UK is still weak. Marketing alone won't convince people to take a chance on an unproven brand when they could get an MG or BYD with existing presence.

The range figures are impressive though. Most compact SUV EVs at this price struggle to get decent mileage. The S05 supposedly offers 400+ miles on larger batteries, which is genuinely competitive.

The S05 looks pretty decent honestly. I've seen some reviews from European markets and the interior quality is surprisingly good for the price. The question is whether Changan can build a proper service network here.

Battery warranty is crucial here. Anyone know what Changan is offering? That's usually where these deals fall apart. If it's only 5-6 years, that's a dealbreaker for a £38k investment.
