Honda Prelude - Classic Sports Coupe Discussion and Ownership Guide

Post by james.lee »

Hey everyone, I wanted to start a discussion about the Honda Prelude, one of the most iconic sports coupes of the 90s and early 2000s. I've been researching this car extensively and I'm seriously considering picking one up.

The Prelude has always fascinated me because it represents a unique era in Honda's lineup. It sits between the Civic and the NSX, offering a genuine sports coupe experience without the supercar price tag. The design is timeless - that pop-up headlight design on the earlier generations, the sleek curves, and the overall proportions just scream quality engineering.

What really impresses me about the Prelude is its dual-axis ATTS (All-Terrain Traction System) or the four-wheel steering on certain models. This was genuinely innovative technology for a mass-market sports car. The handling characteristics are supposed to be exceptional, with a well-balanced chassis that makes it enjoyable on both roads and tracks.

I'm particularly interested in the later generations, around 2001-2008 models. The 2.2-liter and 2.3-liter engines produce decent power, and the build quality from Honda during this period was outstanding. I've heard great things about reliability, though I'm curious about long-term ownership experiences from this community.

The Prelude market seems to be heating up lately with prices climbing. I'm wondering if now is a good time to buy or if I should wait. Also, I'd love to hear from anyone who currently owns or has owned a Prelude - what was your experience like? Any common issues I should watch out for? Performance modifications? Fuel economy in real-world driving? Insurance costs?

I'm really keen to learn from experienced owners before making this investment. Looking forward to your thoughts and experiences!

Great topic! I owned a 2004 Prelude for about six years and absolutely loved it. The handling is genuinely superb - way better than most modern cars in the same price range. The dual-axis steering really does make a difference in cornering. Highly recommend checking one out if you get the chance.

The Prelude is overrated if you ask me. Sure, it looks nice and the engineering is decent, but there are better options out there for the money. The interior hasn't aged well at all, and modern safety features are basically nonexistent. I'd look at a 350Z or G35 instead.

I test drove a Prelude last month and I have to say the seats are incredibly uncomfortable for longer drives. My back was killing me after just 45 minutes. Is that normal or was it just that particular car?

Thanks everyone for the early responses! This is exactly what I was looking for. Noah, that maintenance cost breakdown is really helpful - much appreciated. Andrew, I hear you on the interior, but I'm actually into classic 90s/2000s aesthetics, so that appeals to me more than newer designs.

Maintenance costs on these can add up. I've been tracking expenses on mine for three years now. Transmission fluid, spark plugs, brake pads - it all adds up to about $1,200-1,500 annually on average. Factor that into your budget.

I disagree with andrew_lee - comparing a Prelude to a 350Z isn't fair because they're targeting different markets. The Prelude is more about finesse and balance, while the Z is about raw power. Different strokes for different folks.

The 2004-2008 models are really where it's at. They're more refined than the earlier generations and still have that classic Prelude feel. Parts availability is still decent too.

The pop-up headlights on the earlier models are so cool! They're one of the main reasons I want one. Anyone had issues with them sticking or failing?

If you're looking at 2001+ models, pay close attention to the transmission. Some users have reported that the automatic transmission can be problematic around 100k miles. Check the service history carefully.
