Hey everyone, I just got my service invoice from the dealership and I'm absolutely baffled by some of the charges they're trying to bill me. This got me thinking - what are the most ridiculous OEM charges you've all encountered? I'm talking about those completely unnecessary or absurdly overpriced dealer charges that make you wonder who comes up with this stuff.
For me, it's the diagnostic fee they wanted to charge just to look at my car under warranty. The car is literally still covered, and they wanted to charge me $150 just to plug in a scanner and tell me what the problem is. Then on top of that, there was a charge for "software update installation" that was just a mandatory recall - shouldn't that be covered without extra fees?
I've also heard horror stories about dealers charging crazy amounts for things like cabin air filters that cost $5 to manufacture but they want $80 for. Or programming fees for replacing a key fob that should honestly be built into the labor cost.
What really gets me is how these charges vary wildly between dealers and manufacturers. One dealership will do something for free as part of service, and another will try to charge you an arm and a leg for the exact same work.
So let's hear it - what's the silliest OEM charge you've personally experienced or heard about? Has anyone successfully pushed back against these charges? I'm curious to know if this is just an industry-wide problem or if some manufacturers are worse than others. Drop your stories below!

My dealer wanted $250 to change the cabin air filter. I bought the part online for $18 and did it myself in literally ten minutes. Never going back to that dealership again. The OEM mark-up is absolutely insane.

I got charged $95 just for them to reprogram my door locks after replacing the battery. Like, seriously? The battery is $40 and the reprogramming should take five minutes max. That's a complete ripoff in my opinion.

They charged me $60 just to read a check engine light that turned out to be a loose gas cap. A LOOSE GAS CAP. I could've figured that out myself for free. The diagnostic fee should have been waived once they realized it wasn't actually a problem.

Honestly, I don't think OEM charges are that unreasonable when you factor in the overhead and service guarantees. Sure, they're marked up, but the technicians need to be trained, certified, and the parts come with warranties. It's not as simple as just looking at the part cost.

My maintenance cost went up 40% when I started going to the official dealer instead of my trusted independent mechanic. Same work, same quality, but double the price. Now I only go to the dealer when it's absolutely necessary for warranty purposes.

Right, the diagnostic fees are probably what bothers me the most. You're basically paying them to tell you what's wrong before you even agree to fix anything. And if it's under warranty? That should definitely be free. Glad I'm not the only one dealing with this nonsense.

The worst one I've seen is a $175 charge for 'cabin air filter inspection.' They literally just opened the glove compartment and looked at it for thirty seconds. That's not a service, that's a scam.

The software update fee is what gets me. These are mandatory recalls that manufacturers are required to do by law, yet dealers still try to slip in charges for installation. It should be completely free, and frankly it should have been free from the factory.

I was charged $45 for them to 'top off' my washer fluid. FORTY-FIVE DOLLARS. I could buy a gallon of quality washer fluid for like $5 and pour it myself. How is that even legal?
