Ford Wants $495 for a Frunk on the New Mustang Mach-E - Is This a Joke?

Post by david56 »

I just saw the news and I can't believe what Ford is doing with the new Mustang Mach-E. They're charging $495 as an optional add-on for a frunk - that's a front trunk for those who don't know. A FRUNK. For nearly 500 bucks.

Look, I get it. Frunks are useful storage space on EVs since you don't have a traditional engine up front. But $495 seems absolutely ridiculous for what is essentially a plastic storage compartment. This isn't some high-tech feature or premium upgrade - it's a box.

I've been a Ford customer for years, and I've defended them against a lot of criticism, but this feels like they're nickel-and-diming their customers to death. When did we get to a point where basic storage features became luxury add-ons?

Here's what bothers me most: other manufacturers include this kind of thing standard on their EVs. The Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6, even some Tesla models come with front storage as part of the package. Why is Ford charging extra for something that's becoming table stakes in the EV market?

I'm considering jumping ship to a different brand at this point. Between this and all the other nickel-and-diming I've heard about, it's making me question whether buying Ford is still worth it. Has anyone else looked at alternatives? Are other manufacturers handling this better?

What are your thoughts? Am I overreacting, or is Ford completely out of line here?

I disagree with the outrage here. If you don't want the frunk, don't buy it. It's an optional feature, and Ford needs to recoup design and manufacturing costs somehow. Not everything can be free.

This is absolutely insane. $495 for a frunk? That's essentially markup on plastic and a hinge. Ford is really pushing the limits of what customers will accept. I've already decided my next car won't be a Mustang Mach-E because of stuff like this.

The maintenance cost on these optional features is often overlooked too. When something breaks on a $495 frunk assembly, you're looking at expensive repairs that the basic model owners don't have to deal with. Ford should be more transparent about long-term ownership costs.

Welcome to modern automotive pricing. Everything is becoming an optional add-on. Seat warmers, fancy display screens, storage compartments - it's all designed to inflate the final price. This is just the new business model.

At $495, you're basically paying for a feature that should be standard on a vehicle that costs $40k+. The markup is insane. I'd rather buy a competitor's EV that includes this without the extra charge.

People complain but then buy the cars anyway. Until customers actually stop purchasing these options, Ford has no incentive to change. Vote with your wallet.

I saw someone calculate that the actual materials and labor for a frunk probably cost Ford $80-120 to produce. Charging $495 is pure profit margin exploitation. Honestly disgusting business practice.

This is why I'm going Tesla for my next car. Yeah, they have their own issues, but at least they don't nickel-and-dime you on basic features like storage. Ford is becoming the EA Games of the auto industry.

David, you're absolutely right. This is exactly how the subscription model mentality is creeping into cars. Soon we'll be paying monthly for seat warmers and door handles.
