Starter replacement on modern start-stop vehicles can cost $400-800 in labor and parts depending on the manufacturer. That's roughly double what a traditional starter costs. However, these enhanced starters are rated for 300,000+ start cycles, so it shouldn't be an issue for most owners.

The alternator upgrade is probably the most important component. It needs to recharge the battery much faster after each stop. Manufacturers use high-output alternators specifically for this, which actually improves the electrical system overall.

Most modern vehicles do let you disable it with a button. But if you're constantly disabling it, you're defeating the purpose and just dealing with the added weight and complexity without any benefit. Better to let it do its job.

One last thing - check if your specific vehicle model has any known issues with start-stop before buying. Some manufacturers handled it better than others in the early years. Look at owner forums for real-world experiences.

Exactly Noah. This is what I've been saying. The transmission takes a hit every single time. It's all about cost cutting for manufacturers. They save money on fuel consumption claims while pushing the maintenance burden onto consumers.

Has anyone looked into disabling start-stop? I've heard some cars let you turn it off. Seems like the smarter choice if you're concerned about wear.

The regenerative braking integration with start-stop is clever. When you brake, the car captures energy, and this helps power the restart. It's a well-designed system overall.

Good point about the alternator. I'm leaning toward getting a vehicle with start-stop now. The consensus seems to be that manufacturers have engineered this properly. Thanks everyone for the thorough discussion.
