Thanks everyone for the responses. @olivia.smith - the argument about 'nothing to hide' doesn't really address the core issue. This data could be misused, sold, or accessed improperly. Plus it's about principle - we deserve to know when and where we're being monitored. Mass surveillance without consent is fundamentally different from targeted investigation.

Good point Sofia. Transparency would actually help build public trust rather than this sneaky approach. But I still question whether we need this level of surveillance at all.

The scary part is that once this infrastructure is built and normalized, it's almost impossible to remove or regulate effectively. We need to act now before it's too late.

The real question is accountability. Who oversees this program? Who can audit it? Who can we hold responsible if data is misused? Without accountability, this is dangerous.

Has anyone tried contacting their representatives about this? There should be public hearings and legislation addressing how this data is collected and used. We have power if we organize.

Does anyone know if other states have similar programs? Is this a California-specific thing or is it happening nationwide? This might be bigger than we think.

I looked into California's laws and there's actually very little regulation around these readers. It's a massive gap in privacy legislation. This needs to change urgently.

Look, I get the privacy concerns now after reading more about it. Maybe I was too dismissive. But surely there's a middle ground where we can have security AND privacy?
