Battery costs are dropping every year anyway. Give it another 18 months and the cost of EV batteries will be at parity with traditional engines without needing any credits. The subsidy was temporary anyway.

I work in auto sales and I can tell you firsthand - the credit elimination hurt our EV sales numbers. Customers are asking about it, and when we say they don't qualify, many walk toward the gas section of the lot. It's affecting real-world behavior.

Thanks everyone for the initial replies! I'm glad this sparked some discussion. I'm genuinely torn on this issue. Part of me thinks the market will find equilibrium without the credit, but another part worries we're slowing adoption of a technology we desperately need for climate reasons. Maybe the credit wasn't perfect, but it was serving a purpose during the transition period.

I still think you're all underestimating how much the credit mattered to consumer psychology. People see $7,500 off the sticker price and it feels like they're getting a deal. Without it, even if the total cost of ownership is better, the psychologically perceived value drops.

The infrastructure angle matters too. More charging stations = more EV confidence = more sales, regardless of tax credits. Some of that Biden infrastructure money is going to charging, which might matter more long-term.

Charging infrastructure is critical, but we're getting there. Tesla's network, EVgo, Electrify America - they're all expanding. The grid is getting ready even if people don't realize it.

Has anyone looked at how other countries are handling EV incentives? Europe and China have different approaches that might give us clues about what works best.

The used EV market is interesting right now. Older EVs with high mileage are becoming more affordable, and people can see real-world long-term cost data. Maybe that will drive adoption more than a tax credit ever did.
