Hey everyone! I just came across some amazing news about Toyota's upcoming 2027 WRC prototype and I had to share it here. According to recent reports, Toyota is teasing a new GR Celica through their World Rally Championship prototype development, and honestly, I'm incredibly excited about this.
For those who might not know, the Celica is an iconic nameplate that Toyota retired years ago, so the possibility of it making a comeback under the GR (Gazoo Racing) performance brand is huge. The WRC prototype is essentially a testing ground for new performance technologies and design language that could influence future road cars.
From what I've gathered, the prototype features design cues that suggest Toyota is seriously considering reviving the Celica nameplate as a high-performance vehicle. The WRC program has always been instrumental in Toyota's performance development - look at how the GR Yaris and GR Corolla came about. This could be the same blueprint.
The styling appears to blend modern Toyota design with classic Celica proportions, which would be perfect for a new generation. Given Toyota's commitment to performance through Gazoo Racing, I expect this could be a turbocharged, possibly hybrid-electric performance car that combines rally heritage with road usability.
I'm really curious what everyone thinks about this. Would you be interested in a new GR Celica? What specs would you want to see? Should Toyota stick to traditional combustion engines or go hybrid? Let me know your thoughts below!

The design language in those prototype photos is gorgeous. If Toyota actually produces this, they need to keep that aggressive stance and modern aesthetic. It would be a shame to water it down for mass production like some manufacturers do.

This is exactly what I've been waiting for! A modern GR Celica would be amazing. Toyota needs to compete with cars like the Hyundai i30 N and Ford Focus RS in the performance segment. If they bring back the Celica name with serious performance credentials, count me in.

I'm not convinced about this. The WRC prototype doesn't necessarily mean a road car is coming. Toyota has been teasing us with concepts and prototypes that never materialize into actual vehicles. I'll believe it when I see an official announcement with specs and pricing.

I love the concept, but I'm wondering about the practicality. Would this be a coupe or hatchback? The original Celica was a coupe, but modern performance cars seem to prefer hatchbacks for versatility. Either way, Toyota needs to deliver something that actually stands out in the market.

Thanks for all the responses! I should clarify - while the WRC prototype is definitely a testing platform, Toyota's track record with Gazoo Racing suggests they're serious about translating rally tech to road cars. The GR Yaris proved that. I'm optimistic but realistic about it.

The maintenance cost on these performance Toyotas is going to be significant. Look at what GR models currently cost to maintain - specialized parts, high-octane fuel requirements, and potential warranty limitations. A new Celica would probably be no exception. Just something to consider before getting too excited.

I'm skeptical about this whole thing. Toyota needs to focus on EVs, not reviving old nameplates with combustion engines. A 2027 launch means this would still be gas-powered primarily, which feels outdated. Show me an electric Celica and I'll be impressed.

The WRC connection is really interesting though. Rally cars teach manufacturers so much about handling, durability, and performance dynamics. If Toyota transfers even half of what they learn from WRC to the road Celica, it'll be a legitimate sports car.

Does anyone know the timeline for this? Would it actually arrive in 2027 or is that just the WRC prototype debut year? Big difference between a prototype showing up and an actual production model hitting dealerships.
