Is Toyota Actually Bringing Back the Celica? New Rally Prototype Spotted!

Post by davidyoung205 »

Hey everyone, I just came across some incredible news that has me buzzing with excitement. Toyota has been spotted testing what appears to be a new rally prototype that bears striking similarities to the legendary Celica nameplate. According to reports from Autocar, this wild prototype suggests Toyota might be seriously considering reviving the iconic Celica sports car.

For those who might not remember or weren't around back then, the Toyota Celica was an absolute legend in the sports car world. It dominated rally competitions throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s, earning a reputation as one of the most thrilling and reliable performance machines ever built. The car became synonymous with affordable, accessible performance and captured the hearts of enthusiasts worldwide.

The new rally prototype that's been spotted appears to maintain that same spirit of the original Celica while incorporating modern performance technology and design language. It's got an aggressive stance, aerodynamic bodywork, and all the hallmarks of a serious sports car ready to take on today's competition.

What's particularly interesting is Toyota's strategy here. By using a rally prototype as the testing ground, they're tapping into that rich motorsport heritage that made the Celica famous. This isn't just about creating another sports car; it's about reclaiming a piece of automotive history while proving Toyota's commitment to enthusiast vehicles in an era dominated by SUVs and crossovers.

The implications are huge. If Toyota does bring back the Celica, it could signal a major shift in their lineup priorities. We could be looking at a genuine competitor to cars like the BMW Z4, Subaru BRZ, and even the upcoming Nissan Z models. The rally pedigree alone would give it instant credibility among performance enthusiasts.

I'm really hoping this becomes reality. What are your thoughts? Do you think Toyota should revive the Celica? Would you be interested in one? Let me know your predictions on what this prototype could become!

I'm skeptical about this honestly. Toyota has been so focused on hybrids and EVs lately. A pure gasoline sports car seems out of character for where they're headed. I'd love to be wrong though.

This would be absolutely incredible! The Celica legacy is untouched in my mind. If Toyota can deliver a modern sports car with that same DNA, I'm day one purchase. Rally heritage plus affordability would be a killer combination.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I think the maintenance point is valid, but Toyota has always been known for durability and reasonable service costs. If anyone can make a performance car affordable to maintain, it's them. The rally testing really does suggest something serious is happening here.

The design language of this prototype looks phenomenal from what I've seen. Modern but respectful of the original. If they actually make this happen, it could be the sports car the market desperately needs right now.

Count me in! The automotive world needs more accessible sports cars. Too many options are either ridiculously expensive supercars or underwhelming entry-level vehicles. A proper mid-range Celica could fill that perfect gap.

The maintenance costs on a new Celica could be a real concern for buyers if they price it too aggressively. Performance cars need expensive parts and service, especially if it's targeting the rally market. Toyota needs to be realistic about the economics here.

This rally prototype is probably just Toyota testing new powertrain tech. Don't get your hopes up too high. Companies show prototypes all the time that never reach production. Still cool though!

The specs on this prototype supposedly include some serious performance numbers. If those translate to the production version, we could be looking at something genuinely competitive against the current sports car lineup.

I'd be more interested if they confirmed hybrid or electric options. Even as a sports car enthusiast, I care about the environmental impact. Pure ICE in 2024 feels a bit tone-deaf from Toyota.
