I found a reference to this in an old automotive trade journal. It says they used this method primarily for short to medium distance hauls. Long-distance shipments still used traditional horizontal methods.

Has anyone actually seen photos of these vertically stacked Vegas on trains? I'm trying to visualize exactly how they configured this and I can't quite picture it in my head.

That looks like original interior trim. If you keep it stock, you might want to consider a quality interior detail once you bring it home. The plastics on these can dry out and crack if not conditioned regularly.
