Hey everyone! I just discovered an amazing archive comparison from Car and Driver featuring four iconic luxury coupes from 1988. This is a fantastic snapshot of how different manufacturers approached luxury performance back in the day.

The comparison includes the Acura, BMW, Lincoln, and Mercedes-Benz luxury coupes from that year. It's really interesting to see how each brand had its own philosophy on what luxury meant in the late 80s.

I've always been fascinated by this era of automotive design - the styling cues, the engineering approaches, and how manufacturers competed in the premium segment. The photos really showcase the distinct character of each vehicle.

What I find most compelling is how these cars represent a unique moment in automotive history. The build quality, interior appointments, and performance metrics were all considered cutting-edge at the time.

I'm curious to hear which one appeals to you most from a design or engineering perspective. Were you around when these models were current? Do you remember any of these on the road? The luxury coupe segment was really competitive back then, and each brand brought something different to the table.

Feel free to share your thoughts on the styling, performance, reliability, or any memorable experiences you might have with these models. Looking forward to discussing these classics with everyone!

The Acura coupe gets overlooked in these comparisons, but it was a solid performer. Japanese reliability vs European prestige - tough choice back then. These photos really highlight how different the design philosophies were.

I have to disagree about the Mercedes being the best. The BMW 6-series design was far more timeless and sporty. It didn't look like it was from the 80s as quickly as the Merc did. BMW's engineering was superior too.

Anyone know about the maintenance costs for these? I've heard Mercedes and BMW from this era can be really expensive to maintain. That's one reason I'd lean toward the Acura or Lincoln for long-term ownership.

The Lincoln coupe is so underrated. It had a uniquely American take on luxury that the imports couldn't replicate. That boat-like comfort factor was unmatched. Still holds up aesthetically too!

This comparison really shows how the luxury market was fracturing in the late 80s. Japanese brands were starting to seriously challenge the Germans and Americans. Great historical perspective here.

Those 1988 models are absolutely gorgeous! The Mercedes-Benz coupe had such sophisticated lines compared to the others. The interior quality alone made it stand out from the competition. Great find, Olivia!

I'm torn between the BMW and Mercedes from these photos. Both represent peak luxury coupe design from that era. The build quality visible in these images is just incredible compared to modern cars.

Thanks everyone for the great responses! I think what's really interesting is how each brand's identity comes through in these designs. The Mercedes feels most conservative, the BMW most sporty, and the American offerings have their own charm. The Acura being included shows how far Japanese manufacturers had come by that point.

The Lincoln is way too boxy for my taste. The Europeans clearly understood proportions better. That said, American coupes had a certain presence you can't deny. Different markets wanted different things.
