Hey everyone, found this 2008 BMW X3 3.0si listed at no reserve on Bring a Trailer and thought I'd get some community feedback before the auction closes. The listing shows approximately 138,000 miles on the odometer with what appears to be a well-maintained service history. The exterior is in decent shape with the typical E83 generation wear, and the interior looks clean from the photos. The 3.0-liter naturally aspirated inline-six is one of the more reliable BMW engines, producing around 260 horsepower. It's got the automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, which makes it pretty practical for daily driving or winter conditions. The auction photos show no major accident damage, though there are some minor cosmetic imperfections that you'd expect at this age and mileage. I'm considering bidding but want to know what you all think about the current price trajectory and whether this is a solid buy. The X3 is a popular vehicle and parts availability shouldn't be an issue. My main concerns are the age of the vehicle and potential upcoming maintenance items like spark plugs, cooling system components, and suspension bushings that tend to need attention on E83 X3s. Has anyone owned one of these? What should I be looking out for in the pre-purchase inspection? Also curious about realistic ownership costs going forward. The no-reserve format is interesting - it'll be interesting to see where this settles. Thanks in advance for any insights!

I'd be careful with this one. 2008 is getting pretty old and even with good service history, you're looking at potential issues. The cooling systems on these are known to fail, and that's not a cheap repair. I'd pass unless the price drops significantly.

Nice find! The 3.0si is definitely one of the better X3 engines. That mileage is reasonable for the year. Just make sure you get a thorough PPI done, especially checking the transmission fluid condition and any electrical gremlins. These can get expensive if something major goes wrong.

The maintenance costs on a 2008 BMW can really add up quickly. I owned an E90 3 Series from around the same era and spent nearly $3,000 a year on maintenance and repairs. Tires, brakes, suspension work, and sensors all seem to fail around the same time on these. Budget accordingly if you buy it.

The 3.0si is the right model year and engine for sure. If you're handy you can do a lot of the maintenance yourself and save money. This could be a good long-term ownership experience if you're willing to stay on top of things. Just know what you're getting into with an older German luxury vehicle.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I appreciate the reality check about maintenance costs. I'll definitely be thorough with the inspection and factor in a healthy reserve for upcoming service items. The transmission is something I'll have the mechanic pay close attention to. Has anyone dealt with the iDrive system on these? Any known issues there?

I actually think this is overpriced already based on the early bidding. These X3s were never that special and they're getting old. I'd look for something newer with lower miles instead. You'll probably get better reliability and won't stress as much about major repairs.

Actually I think you're being too negative about this. The X3 3.0si is solid. Yes it's older but if it's been well maintained it should be reliable. The seller clearly took care of it based on the service history. Fair value depends on your market but I'd say this is worth bidding on.

The iDrive on 2008 models is pretty basic compared to newer ones but generally reliable. My main advice is don't fall in love with this specific car. There are other X3s out there and the no-reserve format means the price could jump unexpectedly at the end.

That's a fair point. The 3.0si is definitely preferable to the 2.5i if you're going to drive it regularly. The extra power makes a difference. As for value, check recent sold listings in your area for comparables. That's the best way to know what to bid.
