I just finished reading the Car and Driver archive test of the 1984 Bertone Fiat X1/9, and I had to share my thoughts with the community. This little Italian sports car is absolutely charming and represents a unique moment in automotive history. The X1/9 was truly ahead of its time with its mid-engine layout, which was rare for affordable sports cars back then. The driving experience described in the review emphasizes the car's nimble handling and responsive steering, qualities that make it genuinely enjoyable on the road. The 1984 model year featured the updated engine and improved creature comforts compared to earlier versions, though it still maintained that lightweight, minimalist approach that defines the platform. What strikes me most about the X1/9 is its accessibility—this wasn't an exotic supercar, but rather an attainable sports car that gave enthusiasts real performance and engagement. The Targa-style roof adds to the appeal, offering that open-air experience without sacrificing structural rigidity. The design by Bertone is distinctive and attractive, with clean lines and proportions that have aged remarkably well. For collectors and classic car enthusiasts today, the 1984 X1/9 represents a smart acquisition. It's a car that rewards spirited driving, offers genuine character, and doesn't require the massive investment that other classics demand. The review captures what makes this Fiat special—it's not about raw power or luxury appointments, but about the pure joy of driving a well-engineered, compact sports car. I'm curious to hear from others in the community who have experience with the X1/9 or have driven one. What's your take on this classic Italian machine?

Great find, daniel_johnson! The X1/9 is criminally underrated in classic car circles. That mid-engine design really does wonders for the balance and handling. I've always thought these deserve more appreciation than they get.

I disagree with the 'simply delightful' assessment. These cars were underpowered even for their time, and the reliability issues are well-documented. The interior quality was subpar, and you're paying vintage car prices for something that isn't particularly special.

The 1984 model year is solid. The Targa roof is genuinely practical too. However, I'd caution anyone considering one—maintenance costs can be brutal. Parts availability is spotty, and labor rates for Italian specialists aren't cheap. Budget accordingly if you're thinking about picking one up.

The handling dynamics of the X1/9 are legitimately impressive. For such an affordable package, Bertone really nailed the engineering. It's a driver's car in the truest sense.

Anyone looking at purchasing one should get a pre-purchase inspection from someone who knows these cars inside and out. The structural integrity issues can be expensive to address properly.

The design is gorgeous, but let's be real—these were underdeveloped compared to contemporary Japanese sports cars. The Fiat reliability reputation is deserved. Still love the aesthetic though.

Thanks for the input, everyone. Anna74, you make an excellent point about maintenance. That's definitely something prospective buyers need to consider seriously. The parts sourcing can be challenging, but there's a dedicated community keeping these alive.

I've always wanted to drive one of these. The mid-engine layout must create such a unique driving experience. How does it compare to other mid-engine sports cars from that era?

Kevin, I respectfully disagree about the Japanese comparison. The X1/9 prioritizes handling engagement over raw specs. Different philosophy, equally valid.
