But would you actually want to own this? Imagine being the second owner of a Jeff Koons car. Everyone knows you got it cheap after the original owner dumped it. That's not a good feeling.

What really bothers me is how quickly the market rejected this. Jeff Koons is world-famous, BMW is premium, the M850i is desirable. Why did this collaboration fail so hard?

I see both sides of this. The depreciation is definitely shocking, but if someone loves the art and appreciates the M850i's performance, maybe it's worth it at $100K. It's all about perspective and what makes you happy.

Exactly, annagarcia745. At $100K, you're getting an M850i with extremely low mileage and a unique art collaboration for basically used car prices. That's actually not terrible from a value perspective.

I think there might be a fundamental disconnect between art collectors and car collectors. Art people don't necessarily want to drive a car, and car people don't want their vehicle to be controversial art. It tried to appeal to both and ended up appealing to neither.

The BMW 8 Series in general has been struggling with sales and resale values. This art edition probably just exacerbated the problem. Collectors wanted the regular models more than this special variant.
