The smashing isn't really solving anything though. It just makes taxpayers pay more and doesn't address the core issue. We need federal privacy legislation that regulates how companies like Flock can operate, what data they can collect, and how long they keep it. That's the real solution.

The destruction of these cameras is people voting with their actions when institutions won't listen. It's not ideal, but it shows how strongly communities feel about this issue. Maybe Flock and local governments should actually listen instead of just pushing forward with expansion.

I still think there's a middle ground. Police departments need better tools, and criminals are getting smarter. But Flock needs accountability. Require warrant reviews, limit data retention, establish clear policies on who can access what information. It's possible to have both security and privacy.

The maintenance costs are really piling up for cities. Some places are spending over $5,000 per reader per year just for maintenance and repairs, and that's before vandalism. The ROI on crime prevention doesn't seem to justify the expense, especially when the data privacy issues remain unresolved.

That's a fair point, Rizky, but there's a difference between personal device tracking and government infrastructure that captures everyone without choice. One is opt-in, the other isn't. That distinction matters for privacy rights.

Look, I get the privacy concerns, but let's be real - most people already carry GPS-enabled phones that track them constantly. At least license plate readers only capture when you're in a vehicle. The real issue is Flock's business practices, not the technology itself.

Does anyone else find it ironic that law enforcement wants these cameras for 'safety' but can't guarantee the data won't be abused? We've seen plenty of examples of surveillance tools being used against marginalized communities. I'm not supporting vandalism, but I understand why people don't trust this.
