The Targa roof is such a clever solution. You get the open-air experience without the drawbacks of a full convertible. The engineering on this car is genuinely thoughtful.

If you do get one, set aside a dedicated budget for rust remediation. The body panels and undercarriage are vulnerable on these cars. Preventive maintenance is absolutely critical.

The 1984 refresh was important too. They really addressed a lot of the earlier complaints. Stronger engine, better interiors, improved electrical systems. It's the model year to target if you're shopping.

I still maintain these are overpriced for what you get. The nostalgia factor artificially inflates values. You could get a better-built, more reliable classic for similar money.

The driving position in mid-engine cars is always fascinating. Being over the rear wheels changes everything about how you perceive the road. Must be incredible in the X1/9.

Bertone's design work on the X1/9 is some of their best. The proportions are perfect. While I appreciate the driving dynamics, I think the car's real legacy is about affordable access to sports car thrills.
