Does anyone know if the UK's approach influenced other countries? I'm wondering whether similar timelines happened elsewhere or if Britain was ahead of the curve on this issue.

Still think there's too much government involvement here. But I will acknowledge the safety records have improved. Maybe there's middle ground between total deregulation and the current level of enforcement we have.

The social impact is worth discussing too. Designated driver culture only really emerged in the 90s in the UK. Before that people didn't even have a concept of that responsibility. Education campaigns completely changed how we think about group outings.

The article mentioned some of the ridiculous loopholes that existed. Apparently some people would claim their drink was spiked or blame medication interactions. Courts actually accepted some of these excuses! Completely unacceptable by today's standards.

One thing the article didn't cover much was the technology evolution. Breathalyzers went from huge machines to portable devices to ignition interlock systems. The advancement in detection technology has been impressive.

The pub culture aspect is interesting. British pubs have been a core part of social life for centuries. The shift from 'have a drink and drive home' to using cabs and designated drivers happened pretty recently in historical terms.
