The maintenance cost advantage of EVs is huge though. Way fewer moving parts means significantly lower repair and maintenance expenses compared to traditional cars. This should help VW's long-term customer loyalty.

The environmental impact of EV production is another important consideration. Mining for lithium and cobalt has its own problems, but at least it's a finite cost versus decades of emissions from gas cars.

Can we please stop catastrophizing? Ford has excellent dealer networks and they'll get people in and out quickly. This isn't the end of the world.

I disagree that this is necessarily a major issue. Every manufacturer has recalls these days - it's actually a sign that the safety systems are working as intended. Ford caught it, they're fixing it. Not a big deal in my opinion.
